ALEX ZANARDI

 
Handbike

Alex Zanardi was born in Bologna on  23 October 1966 and grew up in Castelmaggiore.
He began by racing go-karts and moved to F3 in 1988. In 1991 he began his Formula One career with Team Jordan, followed by Tyrrel, Benetton, Minardi and Lotus. In the IndyCar series, which later became formula Cart, he won two titles and beat innumerable records. However, on 15th September 2001 he lost both his legs in a terrible accident in Lausitzring, Germany.
He took part in his first handbike race in 2007 completing the New York marathon, where he came in a surprising 4th place and where he would in fact go on to win in an emotional race in 2011. 
On 18th March 2012 he won the Rome marathon, this time breaking the course record.
In the London 2012 Paralympics he won Gold in the time trial and the road race and he also won a Silver in the relay.
At the 2013 World Championships in Baie-Comeau (Can) he won an impressive total of  three Golds; in Greenville, USA, he continued his success from the World Champs winning two Golds and a Silver.
Respected both as an athlete and as someone with a continually positive outlook on life, after the accident at Lausitzring Zanardi began to take part in various demonstrations for disabled athletes, and after the short-lived retirement from racing began his new sporting carrier in para-cycling, where he competes in handbike in the H4 category. He was nominated Athlete of the Year according to a survey conducted by the Gazzetta dello Sport after the London Olympics, the same title was also awarded to him by the International Paralympic Committee.
In 2010 Zanardi began his role as a TV presenter, hosting a scientific program on Rai3 called “And if tomorrow”, about science and new technology, it obtained good ratings.
Since 2012 he has been hosting the sporting program “Challenges”, also on Rai3. In 2014 he decided to get back into car racing with the BMW Z4 GT3 in the Blancpain championships.
Alex Zanardi is an Enervit ambassador and he demonstrates fully the energy and sporting spirit present at the root of all great sporting histories.
