CRISTIAN ZORZI

Cross Country Skiing

Cristian Zorzi was born in Cavalese on 14th  August 1972. He took part in his first World Cup in Dobbiaco in 1993, in the 10km classic discipline, where he came 118th. Cristian began to get himself noticed towards the end of the ‘90s in the new sprint discipline of high-speed eliminations over short distances. His first World Cup podium finish came in 1999 in Asiago, in the freestyle team sprint (3rd place), and his first win in the freestyle sprint came in Lahti in 2000. From then on all his individual World Cup podium placements were achieved in the freestyle sprint category.
Nicknamed “Zorro” for his exuberant character, and its resemblance to his surname, he was for many years the last leg of the Italian relay team thanks to his speed. He received the silver medal at the World Championships in Lahti in 2001 in the sprint race; the bronze medal at the XIX Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City in 2002 (also in the sprint); and the silver medal, behind Norway, in the 4x10km relay.
At the XX Winter Olympic Games in Turin in 2006 he was the last leg of the Italian relay team which won Gold in the 4x10km. In 2007, together with Renato Pasini, he won the gold medal at the Sapporo World Championships in the freestyle team sprint. At the Vancouver 2010 Games, in his last Olympic appearance, he came 8th in the sprint and 9th in the relay.
He ended his World Cup carrier in the 2009-2010 season and from 2010-2011 he has been part of the Italian Marathon Cup team.
In 2013 he racked up a series of  top-level places in some of the most popular and captivating international marathons, such as the Engadin Ski and the ninth edition of the Fis Marathon Cup 2013. In the same year, he also dominated the 10km freestyle in the Masters World Cup and he, along with his Yellow Flame team, won the nth medal at the national Italian team Championships in Val Formazza in the 4x7.5km relay.
