Cross-country skiing

Name: Federico
Last name: Pellegrino
Born: September 1st, 1990
In: Aosta
Discipline: cross-country skiing
Club: Gruppo Sportivo Fiamme Oro

Federico was born in Aosta, on September 1st, 1990, second of three brothers, he lived in Nus (AO) since he was born, he is now based in Gressoney Saint-Jean. He joins the Gruppo Sportivo Fiamme Oro of Moena in December 2009. He wore skis for the first time at the age of 2, but until 4 he skied only on rare occasions. His father was and is a great fan of cross-country skiing, although not practicing, his desire to pass on his passion began with the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics. At the age of six Federico attended his first ski course in St. Barthélemy, a village near Nus, at 1600 m above sea level. Every year, at the end of the course, the traditional 'garetta', a kids competition, takes place, this is where he wins his first ski race, at the age of 7. At the age of 9 he reached the minimum age to be admitted to his city’s ski club, the St. Barthélemy ski club. From that moment on, during winters, his main activity has been the same as his current profession: the cross-country skier. Federico earned a place to the Italian Championships, but struggles to get significant results. Despite his results he enjoyed skiing and the company of friends, and that was enough for him. Growing up he basked in victory as an aspirant, not only on a regional, but also on a national level, after entering the ASIVA committee. Federico then earns a place in the Junior, then in the U23 up to the A National team. The first bronze medal came at the World Championships in Hinterzarten 2010, he earned his first two points in the world cup in Oslo on March 14th, 2010, something that had happened only to a handful juniors before. His best placement in the World Cup was 22nd in the 2014 overall classification. He won 6 medals that year (6 individual, 1 team) between victories, second and third places. In the intermediate World Cup competitions he won three medals, a victory and two second places. He also won three medals in the Italian championships, two golds in the sprint in 2013 and a bronze in the sprint in 2012. In December 2014 he won the men’s freestyle sprint in Davos, Switzerland. On January 24th, 2015, at Rybinks, Russia, he again climbed on to the winner’s spot in the freestyle sprint, only days after having triumphed, on January 6th, in Val Mustair in Switzerland in this same competition. In 2016 Federico earns the title of "king" of cross-country skiing in the Sprint World Cup, becoming the strongest sprinter in the world, after a tight season full of success. At the following World Championships, Lathi 2017, he won the gold medal in the sprint, the silver medal in the team sprint (again with Nöckler) and came in 8th place in the relay race.
